"Most of the mothers I know will see themselves reflected in these wise pages, and will find long-overdue comfort here."
—Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love
"Bad Mother is blunt, wry, prescriptive and pleasurable."
—Meg Wolitzer, author of The Ten-Year Nap
"I relished her graceful language, self-mocking humor, her clear, if sometimes painful, insight. And I admire her—deeply—for the bracing honesty that redeems it all."
—Peggy Orenstein, author of Waiting for Daisy
For the past two months, a major American magazine and an allied news service have been engaged in a legal battle with the United States Navy over records that they believe show that John McCain once was involved in an automobile accident that injured or, perhaps, killed another individual.
Today Michael and I took the kids out for dinner down in Fruitvale, Oakland. Along the road we passed "Yes on 8" signs sprinkled between the Obama signs. It will break my heart if the incredible job we Obama supporters did registering traditionally disenfranchised groups results in the passing of this cruel malignancy of a proposition. I'll tell you what is a threat to my marriage -- others trying to take the right to wed away. The people who oppose Prop 8 are, by and large, old and getting older, and soon their bigotry will pass the way of the dinosaurs. That's why they're trying to enshrine their prejudice in the Constitution, first of California, then of the United States.
Zeke, sitting next to me as I watched this video, whispered, "We have got to win this thing." My eleven-year-old knows good from evil, right from wrong. I hope the rest of the state does.
ps. Sorry about the awful schmaltzy song.

So word has it that the RNC has spent no less than $150,000 on clothes, hair and make up for the Palin family. With Abe refusing to wear anything but "skinny jeans," Zeke outgrowing his shoes faster than we can buy them, and Rosie's minis fast turning into Micro-minis, I sure wish we had that kind of help. I have a book tour coming up in May, and before the economy tanked I promised myself a Prada suit. So much for that. No shopping sprees at Neiman's for me. Lucky Sarah.

This weekend at a fundraiser in Piedmont I was standing in the usual line to get my photograph snapped with Joe Biden. I told him that I was planning on giving the picture to my mother, who was in the hospital after a terrible fall. She tumbled down the stairs and broke her right femur and right wrist. As you can imagine, she's been pretty depressed. She's in pain, and her life is going to be dramatically different in the short term and perhaps even in the long term. Joe took my cell phone and called her. "Hey Ricki, this is Joe Biden. I hear you had a fall." He talked to her for about a minute, cheering her immeasurably, and making me sign up for ever after as a foot-soldier in the Biden army.

Joe Biden is going to be in the Bay Area! One last time. It's going to be a terrific event. The man is feisty, funny and informative. If you'd like to go you can check date, time and address and rsvp here.

What was most satisfying to me about Barack Obama's National Women's Leadership Issues Conference in Chicago this past weekend was the way women's issues were defined. Yes, we had a panel on the Supreme Court with a focus on abortions right and equal pay for equal wor, and an appearance by the dignified, compelling, and heartbreaking Lilly Ledbetter. Yes, Suze Orman spoke to us about personal finance, and her reasons for supporting Obama (to avoid being "personally responsible for the downfall of the entire world."). Yes, none other than Oprah Winfrey gave a rousing speech in which she cautioned that, while we Americans have been deceived before, we are not in the mood to be deceived again, and that it is our job as women to "midwife" this election into a new kind of America. And yes, we were graced with the elegant and inspiring presence of the lovely Michelle Obama. All that is true, but what got me, what made me the happiest, was that among the "women's issues" we talked about at this conference were the economic crisis, the opportunities available in a "green" economy, and national security, with a particular emphasis on Iraq and Afghanistan.
As someone with bipolar disorder I know what it means to lose control of your temper. McCain's outbursts, his red-face rage, his uncontrolled fury, remind me of me when I'm in a mixed state, that dangerous period when you are in a low mood but with very high energy. I can't imagine someone with so little control given any kind of authority. Scares me to death. Barack's equanimity, his unflappability, is one of his most important characteristics. As McCain said in the last debate, we need someone with a steady hand to lead this country in this time of crisis.
